How a roulette table is laid out

A standard roulette table splits into the wheel and the betting layout. Inside bets sit on individual numbers or small groups. Outside bets cover larger fields such as red/black, odd/even, and dozens.

Dealers spin the ball against the wheel. Once the ball settles in a pocket, the layout is locked and winning bets are paid to the posted odds.

Inside bets vs outside bets

Inside bets pay more because they cover fewer numbers. A straight-up number pays 35 to 1. Splits, streets, corners, and six-lines step the payout down as the coverage grows.

Outside bets hit more often and pay even money or 2 to 1. They are easier to read when you are new to the table, and they keep the session slower.

  • Straight-up: one number, 35 to 1.
  • Split: two numbers, 17 to 1.
  • Dozen or column: 12 numbers, 2 to 1.
  • Red/black, odd/even, high/low: even money.

European wheel vs American wheel

European roulette uses a single zero. American roulette adds a double zero. That extra pocket is why the American house edge is higher. If both games are offered, the single-zero wheel is the tighter game.

Bet size still matters more than superstition. Set a session limit before the first spin, and treat each spin as independent.
